The first material traces of Christianity in Vrsar can be discerned since the IV century and are in cusal link with the enactment of the Edict of Milan, although it is possible that Christian communities in Vrsar have existed even earlier, but as illegal and hidden.
The presence of the first Christians in Vrsar is also reflected in the titulars of the oldest churches: the Mother of God (the church in the Vrsar harbour, nowadays called the Basilica of St. Mary of the Sea) is the oldest titular recognized in late antiquity, as well as St. George, the early-Christian saint and martyr.
